Fitness And Health Myths: Are You Falling For Them?
May 18th, 2011 | By Todd Bowman | Category: Lose Weight, Training How To
Have you been trying to get rid of that gut by simply doing tons of ab workouts? If so, then you should know about some fitness and health myths, especially the myth of spot reduction.
Spot reduction implies that it is possible for you to target fat loss form specific areas of your body by training those areas with resistance. It is totally FALSE!
There is no such thing as an exercise induced localized fat loss. It is not possible for you to target specific areas to lose fat from through specific exercises.
You should know that fat and muscle are two different kinds of tissue. When you’re doing specific exercises, all you’re doing is stimulating the specific muscles involved in the movement. However, that stimulation no way affects the fat in that area. Performing bicep curls isn’t going to tighten your biceps, performing leg curls won’t enhance your hamstrings, and doing crunches or any amount of sit ups will ever going to magically give you a perfect set of six packs.
Fat is simply a stored form of energy and when you enter into a state of calorie deficit, that’s the time that the fat will be pulled out from where it was stored whenever it sees fit.
Overtime, you’re going to lose fat from your entire body but you won’t have control over the specific areas of your body where fat is pulled from.
Entering into this caloric deficit state is possible with enough weight training. Don’t be discouraged if performing a specific exercise doesn’t help in losing fat in that area. You’re goal whenever you’re weight training should be to stimulate and increase muscle mass.

Since muscle is a metabolically active tissue, it is going to help you further into reaching that caloric deficit and in the process get rid of body fat as a whole.
Don’t think that while you’re pulling up a crunch or lifting weights that you’re actually burning fat. All you’re doing is stimulating the specific muscles
If you want to get that toned look, all it needs are two things: reduce the layer of fat sitting on top of the muscle so that the muscle underneath is more visible.
Stop falling for those fitness and health myths so that you’ll be one step closer to that tone lean body that you really want.
